Rhodes Sights and Monuments:
Rhodes
Island is home to the most interesting and astounding sights and monuments in the world. Among these of course is the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Built between 292 to 280 B.C., this monument has been described to be of unique technical and artistic value and was dedicated to the
Grecian
god Helios.
Another must-see in Rhodes Island is the Medieval City, a village that dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. This place is replete with gothic-style architecture as it was originally constructed as an extension of the Byzantine city. It was originally designed to be a reinforced fortification against the enemy. Today, it is one of the best preserved medieval towns that have been listed by UNESCO as world cultural heritage monument. Its cobbled streets, Byzantine churches, mosques, the squares, even the houses and inns, will make you feel like going back to the past. After the Medieval City, one can drive further to
Lindos
, one of Rhodes’ main attractions, and popular also for its mythological structures such as sugar cube houses and the awe-inspiring Lindos Acropolis. When going to the hills of Lindos to have a good view of the spectacular St. Paul’s Bay, you can rent out a donkey and go up the traditional way.
One of the sights that attract mostly nature-lovers is the Valley of the Butterflies near the village of Kalamonas in Rhodes Town. The valley is a wildlife sanctuary and every year, between June and September, millions of rare and colorful Kalimorfa butterflies, popularly called Jersey Tiger Moths, visit the valley to feed on the lush flora surrounding the place. Tourist guides can teach you how to handle the butterflies so you can take a photo of yourself covered with these shiny winged fairies. The place also has a picnic area and souvenir shops you can enjoy.
But if you love to just lounge and be lazy all throughout your
cheap holiday
treat in
Rhodes
Island, then the Aegean sea will welcome you with much warmth. The sights along the coast will be enough to take your breath away and it is best to check in on one of those spas that has a beautiful beach front view.
