El Carnaval is a huge event on the island of Tenerife but it is celebrated in grand style in Puerto de la Cruz, usually at the harbor at Europa Square. Celebrated the day after Ash Wednesday, it is surrounded by festivals that also celebrate the sardines, La Sardinada, a large cash crop for Tenerife, and La Fiesta Del Aqua, also known as La Embarcacion de la Virgen del Carmen. During la Sardinada, a huge papiér maché sardine is brought to the harbor and burned in effigy. This event is met with loud cheers and men dressed in women’s clothing, after which a fireworks display begins. Festivals are popular in Puerto de la Cruz and shouldn’t be missed, if afforded the opportunity.
The city is home to the famous Jardín beach and Jardín Botá nico, lush with palm trees and lined with
cheap hotels designed with enjoyment and unlimited relaxation for their guests. Located on the edge of town is a magnificent zoo, Loro Parque, which now houses over 300 species of parrots from around the world. Since opening in 1972, the owners have worked towards expansion and now exhibit a large variety of animals including chimpanzees, sea lions, gorillas, marmosets, and various sharks, to name only a small few. The sharks have a walkway built into their tank affording visitors to see sharks in their habitat from a more personal location. They also host several shows each day utilizing a number of their animals, including some Orcas obtained from Sea World in 2006. Loro Parque is devoted to animal preservation and conservation and is a major rehabilitation center for animals with several of their primates and big cats at one time part of the black market or suffering from problems at prior zoos or habitats.
Another fantastic site to visit, while in Puerto de la Cruz, would be the Bananera El Guanche, the local banana plantation that gives each guest, at the end of each tour, free banana liquor and bunch of bananas. Also, there are many historical churches and buildings, such as the Old Customs House or Casa de la Aduana, or the Castillo San Felipe.
This city has so much to offer, and more than is mentioned here, that a cheap holiday in Puerto de la Cruz is desirable and easy to plan. Anyone planning
