Paralimni holidays:
Going inland from the south eastern coast of Cyprus is the town of
Paralimni, which is situated in what's called the Famagusta area. What used to be a sleepy rural area back in the early seventies has grown overnight in the middle of the decade when refugees retreated into town during Turkish occupation. Since then Paralimni began to grow both in size and population and later became the region's administrative capital.
The urban community of Paralimni holds very little interest for tourists yet the town has retained a friendly reputation which indeed provides adequate ground for a couple of hours of anybody's time.
Unlike many other towns in Cyprus, Paralimni lacks character architecturally. Only little, if anything at all, remains from the original village. Most houses are plain rectangular blocks, but are mostly compensated for by their very attractive gardens of blossoming trees and flowers.
Within the center of the town are a very few places for
cheap holidays for tourists to visit. Among three churches, only one is open to the public, but this sole open place of worship is in truth really interesting. It is the oldest and it also serves as a museum. Inside you can find a beautiful collection of religious icons, as well as a few old photos and portraits. The town also holds a few shops which hold fine selections of ceramics. These range from licensed ancient museum pieces to original modern creations. There are also a number of bars and cafes in and around the town square, which is a great alternative from the noisy bars of nearby tourist crowded towns.
Paralimni is also regarded to have the island's best dancers and folk poets. They are in great demand during various social events including weddings, fairs, concerts and other celebrations. This town might have an eerie feel as compared to others, but it definitely provides a very refreshing holidays in Cyprus alternative for anyone tired of the fast paced lifestyle of surrounding resorts like
Ayia Napa.
