Oia holidays:
A holiday in the great
Santorini Island can never be complete without seeing the picturesque village of Oia. This quiet village is known worldwide as the place with the most spectacular sunset. Tourists travel to this place all the way from
Fira a good eleven kilometers away just to view the setting of the sun along the Aegean Sea. Many artists from around the world become captivated by the beauty of Oia so much that many small galleries have sprouted in and around the village’s main square.
A stroll around Oia is an exhilarating experience in itself given the magnificent sights that this cliff-edge village offers. From this side of Santorini, one can see the volcano ever so imposing and you will enjoy the changes of its color from glorious yellow at crack of dawn to bright white-blue at high noon to an amazing red-orange at sunset. As you go along, the Thirasia and Goylas will look impressive and mighty. Towards the end of the village at the eastern side is the majestic Platani church surrounded by traditional white-washed concrete houses. Further down, a small pebbled beach offers a nice swim or a little snorkeling.
Many paintings had been created by less renowned artists who found the inspiration they had been looking for in Oia. Thus, art galleries have are surprisingly numerous for such a small village. Others merely display their work on the streets and allow tourists to feast their eyes. Oia also has a number of cultural attractions that speak of the village’s rich history, including the Maritime Museum which has a small library, several artifacts and remains of the ancient Venetian fortress.
Through the square, there are a row of cafes, restaurants and taverns that serve delicious sea foods. Oia is famous for its fish menus and the gastronomic delight that one can experience here is unforgettable. Truly, there’s so much reason to visit and stay at charming Oia.
