Messaria holidays:
At the central part of the Cycladic Island of
Santorini is a warm and colorful village called Messaria. This place has been for centuries the production center of the famous Santorinian wine. Only more recently has Messaria become a tourist attraction of its own right. Development of commercial establishments as well as several
cheap hotels and villas show the continued prosperity that this quaint village has achieved.
The architecture of Messaria is one for the books. Formerly the commercial district of Santorini, Messaria sits on a huge rock and accords other lower villages a welcoming passage. The houses lining up the paved alleys are ancient and traditionally Greek. Most of these white washed houses have remained intact despite the great volcanic eruption in the 1800’s and 1900’s. A major attraction is the Argiros mansion, built by the famous winemaker George E. Argiros in 1888. The mansion, with all its intricate interior design and medieval furnishings, had been wisely restored to its old splendor. Another must-see is the Metropolis church which had been built by the Greek Orthodox during the medieval times.
Pretty, colorful gardens surround the whole village and the vineyards exude an intoxicating smell. Quaint yet
cosmopolitan hotels and restaurants dot the village. The more interesting places for a night out are the taverns which have a mix of the medieval and the modern. These taverns not only offer great food but also lively entertainment. Messaria can actually be loads of fun if you will explore the recreation centers and shops that sell great products at surprisingly low prices.
Messaria is just four kilometers away from
Fira. A bus going around the island will take you to the middle of Santorini and to charming Messaria. The warm hospitality of the people is something you must get used to as you will surely come back for more of the pampering and the kindness.
