Holidays in Mellieha: This rural village in the northwestern side of Malta Island is one of best place to spend your cheap holidays in most seasons of the year. It is one of the most popular resorts in Malta for summer holidays with its good view and warm climate.

History
The name of the town is derived from a Semitic word that means “salt”, probably a reference to the large salt bay along its coasts. Mellieha was prone to pirate attacks which made it not suitable for people to live, it was only in the 18th century that the town populated with the Knights of St. John (who ruled Malta) built watch towers and fortresses around it.
As a tourist destination, cheap holidays Mellieha is a result of the hard work among the British who developed and promoted this lovely town. The British were the first to expand Mellieha with the rise of many shops, hotels and restaurants. There are even many British citizens who have their own summer houses in this village.

Accommodations
There are many hotels and apartments in the area but this place is more famous the presence of many private villas and farmhouses. If you can afford, you must try staying in these places which have great views as most of them are located on top of the hills overlooking the bay. Some farmhouses in the countryside will give their guests great opportunity to experience the wonderful scenery and landscape of this rural village.

Attractions
The Parish Church is the biggest structure in the area with its Baroque style; this church has its picturesque image during night time. The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin is a national shrine and must-see in Mellieha; this chapel has a fresco of the Madonna and the Child that is said to be painted by St. Luke himself.
St. Agatha’s Tower, popularly known as Red Tower is the village primary landmark. This watchtower was built as a defense against pirate attacks.
Children will be very happy to visit Popeye Village or Sweethaven Village. This attraction is actually the set of the 1980 film, Popeye starring Robin Williams.
