Holidays in Meknes:
In the 17th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail built a splendid palace that blends European and Moorish styles. The doors and columns were designed impeccably far superior than other the other Maghrebs in the region. This palace has thus earned for the city of Meknes the label as the Versailles of Morocco.

The harmony of Spanish and Arabic architectural designs is outstanding in the many 17th century structures of Meknes. Additionally, after having been dominated by the Roman Empire in 117 AD, there are remnants of Roman architecture in a few of its sights. Meknes was eventually built as a fortress or a ‘Kasbah’ by the Berber tribe, called the Miknasa, during the 10th century. Meknes soon became a bustling Berber habitat that saw its golden age during Sultan Moulay Ismail’s reign. During the empire of Sultan Ismail, the sites was said to have been built by slaves whom the tyrannical Sultan Ismail treated like rats.

While Meknes is touted as an imperial city, the smallest among the four of such cities in Morocco, it is also fast becoming the agro-industrial center of the country. Cheap holidays in Morocco cannot be complete without visiting Meknes to taste its vintage wines. It also produces supple olives and citrus and other fresh agricultural crops. Other interesting stops are the Bab Mansour and the Museum of Moroccan Arts located in Bab Jamai. Bab Mansour was the original site where Meknes people lived before the Roman Empire raided the place. The Museum of Moroccan Arts is similarly stunning as the other museums in Meknes and gives a thorough historical account of the rise and fall of Sultan Ismail. To the north of Meknes is Volubilis, a tourist favourite for its Roman ruins. The place can be reached from Meknes for about an hour on an exciting camel-back ride.
