Fira holidays:
Sitting majestically on the edge of a cliff, with its whitewashed houses and century-old alleys, the village of Fira is recognized as the most important village in
Santorini. An impressive view of the caldera is perennially admired by tourists and makes Santorini-lovers go back again and again.
During the summer, a
cheap holiday in Fira can be refreshing. Take a dip at the cool water of the Aegean Sea, or lounge at the scenic
hotels where you are pampered like a royalty. There is also much to do as many of the small streets in Fira are flooded by small shops that sell great souvenir products and trinkets, restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. These buildings, though, are only found in the town center. In other areas, a walk around Fira can be therapeutic as many streets are silent and provincial. You can stroll towards the archeological museum which shelters many items excavated from an ancient Minoan settlement of Akrotiri. Fira itself has a rich cultural heritage as it is one of the only surviving villages in the Cycladic islands after the great volcanic eruption and earthquake in 1956 that submerged half of the island. The churches and monasteries are highly interesting, among them the cathedral of Hypapandi and the monastery of Panagia ton Dominikanidon which has remained well-preserved despite its age and the battering of nature.
Along the banks of the Caldera, one can hire a small boat and take leisurely tour around the submerged volcano in Nea and Palia Kameni. If you prefer to circle the caldera by land, there are buses that go to all directions in the island. The
taxis
are also accommodating and will be happy to take you anywhere. You should also not miss a night out in Fira. In the main square at the town center, the Plateia Theotokopoulou has everything you can expect from a watering hole – pubs, karaoke bars and disco houses. Or if you prefer to just sit and sip a cup of Grecian coffee, there is a spot in the main square that gives you an astounding view of the sea and the stars.
