Portugal Holidays – Many great holiday resorts close to the UK
Long thin Portugal offers a choice of holiday destination; because much of its coast is along the Atlantic the most popular area for visiting is the south coast, the Algarve, where there are clusters of great holiday resorts to stay. And Portugal likes to possess a couple of random island so Madeira and the Azores come under the Portuguese aegis. The main mainland airports are Faro for the Algarve, and Lisbon for the southern Atlantic coast.
Because of its great tourist appeal, there are loads of offers for holidays in Portugal such as all inclusive holidays, cheap deals, family deals or even late deals if you are lucky, depending on where you are heading.
Holidays in Portugal – A destination with rich varied history
The climate is Mediterranean; the south of Portugal ‘round the corner’ is of course warmer with temperatures getting up into the 30°C in the summer. On the Atlantic coast the breezes tend to keep the temperature down a bit, which some people prefer. Most of the resorts started out as fishing villages but have expanded beyond much recognition. However there are places where the varied history of Portugal can be seen in the Moorish buildings with their ceramic tiles and ceramic mosaics.
Portugal Holidays – Enjoy the sun’s warmth on a sandy beach
The main resorts for holidays in Portugal are Albufeira, Cascais, Estoril, and Vilamoura along with the capital, Lisbon, and the islands mentioned above. Because Portugal isn’t far flightwise it is well possible to consider it as a long weekend break destination just to top up the tan or get some warmth in winter. So summer holidays or winter sun holidays are the order of the day. The beaches are sandy, the seas on the south coast are warm (the Atlantic less so). Even on the Algarve you can, if you wish, find quieter spots in its many coves and bays, and escaping to the quiet hinterland is also interesting.
Holidays in Portugal – Unique local cuisine & interesting nightlife
Portugal has a fish based and distinctive cuisine to try out, as well as the usual fast food outlets to be found in the bigger resorts. It hasn’t got the massive nightlife reputation of, say, Ibiza but there are nightspots – and bars, cafes, restaurants do stay open late and provide their own entertainment in many instances.
Portugal is very different from Spain so if you have got stuck in a Spanish rut, give it a try and start planning your holidays in Portugal.
