Corfu History and Tradition:
The history of Corfu dates back to the Paleolithic Age as proven by archeological findings in different points of the island. This place has close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and Italy, and this strategic location holds a great importance in its history. This place has been ruled by French, British, Romans and Venetians for centuries. Spending cheap holidays in Corfu will transport you back in time to when the world was young and this eastern part of the world held so much promise.

Corfu was invaded by the Corinthians and it became a substantial commercial power of the Mediterranean region. Its language, music and art were advanced in the ancient times with a government structured to implement law and order upon the island. It gained independence from Corinth in 585 B.C. later allied with Athens to perpetuate the Peloponnesian war. It eventually ceded its control to the entire Roman Empire they ruled until 337 A.D. During the first century A.D., much of the island was converted to Christianity. You can see the strong influence of Christianity throughout the churches in the island.

Around 1200, Corfu was conquered by the Venetians. They fortified the city and returned civil rights to its inhabitants. Throughout the years, Turkish forces kept on attempting to conquer the land and although there were areas that were seriously pillaged, the city castle stood steadfast. Corfu was handed over to France by the Treaty of Campo Formio. The British government also took control on November 1815 who introduced strict governance. Corfu was finally ceded to Greece by through the Treaty of London which was signed by Russia, France and United Kingdom.

Music is in the frontline of Corfu’s traditions. In the poem Odysseys which was written by Homer, a magnificent singer, Dimodoko, sang before Ulysses at a state dinner. This ancient tradition reverberated through time in the forms of operas and festivals. In the Old Town, you can hear people singing a melodic song with their Corfu accent.

There’s also a rich tradition of local dances. Corfu folks dance to manic rhythm and cheerful melodies and among the most popular are “Kalamatianos” and “Tsakonikos”. This music is accompanied by guitar, mandolin and drums.
