The growth of the Moorish Empire led to the fall of the Visigoths and Algarve under Moorish rule. The Moors are credited to give the present name of “Algarve” from the Moorish name of the region “Al-Gharb- Al-Andalus”. When the Christians got back the region from the Arabs, it was known as Kingdom of Algarve from the word “Al-Gharb”. The Christians continued the works of past settlers and Algarve became the center for nautical studies under the reign of the famous Prince Henry the Navigator.
Algarve experienced turmoil when its king died and left no heir. The king of Spain declared himself as the king and Portugal was put under Spanish rule. It also experienced invasions from the British and the French and civil wars until a republic was proclaimed.
