The Christians continued the works of past settlers and Algarve became the center for nautical studies under the reign of the famous Prince Henry the Navigator.

Algarve experienced turmoil when its king died and left no heir. The king of Spain declared himself as the king and Portugal was put under Spanish rule. It also experienced invasions from the British and the French and civil wars until a republic was proclaimed.
