Algarve History and Tradition:

A long, long time ago before Algarve is famous as a destination for cheap holidays; this area is a fishing area and a busy trading port that connects Europe, North Africa and the Arabian worlds. The first settlers of Algarve are the tribes from North Africa followed by the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians are he first to establish this region as an important port before it declined in the 28th century due to natural disasters and a civil war.

Following the Phoenicians are the Carthigians, Romans and the Visigoths. Each of these tribes contributed to what Algarve is now particularly on its traditions and culture. The growth of the Moorish Empire led to the fall of the Visigoths and Algarve under Moorish rule. The Moors are credited to give the present name of “Algarve” from the Moorish name of the region “Al-Gharb- Al-Andalus”. When the Christians got back the region from the Arabs, it was known as Kingdom of Algarve from the word “Al-Gharb”. The Christians continued the works of past settlers and Algarve became the center for nautical studies under the reign of the famous Prince Henry the Navigator.

Algarve experienced turmoil when its king died and left no heir. The king of Spain declared himself as the king and Portugal was put under Spanish rule. It also experienced invasions from the British and the French and civil wars until a republic was proclaimed.

Aside from fishing, rich and fertile lands of the region contributed to the growth of many fruit trees like figs, almonds and oranges.
