From a summer residence to tourists spot, the Achillion Palace has come a long way for more than one century of its existence. It was built by the Empress of Austria who is fondly referred as Empress Sissy in early 19th century when she fell in love in the area from her frequent visit to the village. It sits high in the hill of the village which gives a panoramic view of the island and the Mediterranean Sea. From Empress Sissy, the Achillion went to the Emperor of Germany as a place for relaxation and added new rooms that showcase his military might. During the Second World War, the palace became a place for comfort when it was used as a hospital. Post war era made the palace a public property and now became an asset in
Corfu’s tourism.
Built by an Italian architect, it is named after one of Greece’s most famous heroes, Achilles. The statue of the dying hero in the garden is the most famous spot in the palace. There are also many statues of Achilles in the palace that shows the Empress’ admiration to the Greek hero. Aside from its breathtaking gardens, the whole palace holds priceless interiors from beds to its intricate designs. The whole palace speaks of grandeur and artistic superiority.
