Located above Bohali is the Venetian Castle, built sometime in the 15th Century. Having been destroyed many times by invaders, each time the people of Zante re-built, sometimes under the protest of the invaders who destroyed it in the first place. However, the invasions eventually stopped and the castle still stands today as a proud symbol of the dominance of spirit exhibited in the people of this island, that they would never allow their castle to remain fallen. The Castle has regular visiting hours and an entrance fee is charged.
The
beaches of Zante are beautiful, plentiful and ready for your arrival. At certain times of the year, some beaches may be off-limits due to another famous sight to see, that of the Loggerhead Sea Turtles laying their eggs in June, the hatchlings making an appearance 55 days or so later in August. However, the sun is abundant in Zante most of the year so bring your sunblock. The water surrounding the island is a magnificent green but clear making scuba diving a popular sport on the island.
St. Mark’s Square, starting in the 16th Century, was a popular meeting point for nobility during the French occupation of
Zante. In 1797 the popolaroi or peasant class burned the infamous libro d'oro, the golden book, which contained the names of the nobility and made the symbolic gesture of planting the “Tree of Freedom”. The Catholic Church of St. Mark was established in the square in 1518.
