Getting to Tenerife:
As Tenerife is an island, your options for getting there might seem limited. However, with modernization come options. A hundred years ago, the only way to get to Tenerife would have been via boat. While that’s still available, there is now more than one way to arrive for your cheap holiday to Tenerife.

Arriving by air is perhaps the easiest way to travel, with two airports on the island, one in the north, one in the south. Both airports have a full line of services at the disposal of travelers; restaurants, banks, bars and car hires to name just a few of their amenities. There are a number of both international and regional airlines servicing both airports with direct flights from all major cities in and around Europe; cities such as Frankfurt, Paris, London, Helsinki and Aberdeen, to name but a small minority.

Should you desire a water crossing, in the fashion of our ancestors, you have two options. You can come via a passenger ferry, obtaining transportation once you arrive in Tenerife. You also have the choice of bringing your car across via ferry, giving you access to your vehicle at all times. Once a week, Trasmediterranea, a large ferry company in Cadiz, offers for a fee passage from Cadiz to Santa Cruz, which is a 48-hour voyage. On the ferries are relaxing quarters and children’s play area, to make the voyage a bit more restful, getting your holiday off to a good start. On the island are other ferry options offering passage between the various islands in the chain.

Upon arrival in Tenerife, whether by air or sea, the island offers a full range of transportation alternatives. At the airport, docks and throughout the city, including at some of the more upscale resorts, are car hire companies ready to put you in an inexpensive automobile. In addition, Tenerife has a magnificent public transportation service in the form of their local bus services, Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife, S.A.U. or TITSA. In existence for over 100 years, TITSA has humble beginnings as a carriage pulled by a single horse between Santa Cruz and La Laguna, five people at a time. Now owners of hundreds of busses, running regularly, TITSA now carries millions of people each year and carries them to all points on the map efficiently and comfortably.

In 2007, the Tenerife government added a tram-light rail service between La Laguna and Santa Cruz, with regular stops along the route with tickets sold at every stop or station. Imagine seeing the countryside from the window of a train, alongside the local population. Currently in the planning stage are more rail lines to more points of the island with additions being planned between La Cuesta and Tincer as well as an additional line beginning in Santa Cruz carrying passengers to the southern resorts through the Tenerife South airport.
