Menorca which belongs Balearics Islands complex, has a very rich history throughout past centuries, which makes it an interesting place to for holidaymakers to spend their
cheap holidays. From prehistoric times to modern times, the island survived many invaders and rulers and became a very outstanding society that we know Menorca is today. Likewise,

The island of Menorca has been settled by many people way back in the prehistoric times as seen its their burial chambers and megalithic structures which were mostly for religious purposes. Greeks. The northern tribe of Africa known as the Carthigians came to the island to recruit soldiers to fight against their rivals – the Romans.
Upon the victory of the Romans against the Carthigians, they settled and controlled Menorca. They are best remembered as the ones who built roads, ports and introduced the Christian religion. The Romans gave the name of the island as “Minorica”. The reign of the Romans in Menorca like the rest of the Roman Empire was threatened by many barbaric attacks like the Vandals.
The rise of the Ottoman Empire placed the island in Moorish rule and changed the name of the island to “Minurka”. The Muslim rulers made the town of
Ciutadella as its capital and improved the island’s agriculture particularly its irrigation system. When the Christians defeated the Moors, the island was placed under the kingdom of Aragon of Spain
.
The 16th and 18th century of Menorcan history witnessed many calamities and disasters like plague, pirate invasion and terror. It was only when the British came that Menorca experienced its “Golden Age”, the British then made the city of Mao as its capital. The British was defeated by the
French that also ruled the island but they were defeated by the British after a short time.
In the early part of the 19th century, the British returned the island to the Spanish crown. At present, Menorca like the rest of the Balearic Island is autonomous regions of
Spain.
