Cheap holidays Malta is filled with rich cultural heritage and traditions as well as a deep story from its past. With its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta’s neighboring countries of Italy, Greece, Tunisia and further is Turkey and Cyprus which are politically part of Western Asia. Malta has served many civilizations dating back from prehistory and succumbed to different colonizers before it was granted independence in 1964.

The first recorded settlers of Malta are the Sicilians which is very obvious due to the proximity of Sicily from Malta. These early inhabitants started the constructions of stone monuments from slabs to big blocks of limestone which are still present today and one of Malta’s famous sights. The Phoenicians paved the role of Malta as a chief commercial port while the ancient Greeks gave the named Melita which later evolved to Malta. Carthigians and Romans settled in Malta while Saint Paul who was believed to have been shipwrecked to the island introduced and propagated Christianity.

Like most neighboring countries, it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks after the decline of the Byzantine Empire. Through the Reconquista, Malta became a part of the kingdom of Aragon. Perhaps, the most famous group of Maltese’s history are the Knights of Malta or the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem which was formed as one of the highest group of crusaders. The Knights are responsible for the massive modernization of Malta from a simply farming and fishing society. They built palaces, churches and improved trading and the economy as a whole. Before its independence, Malta became part of Sicily, of the French Empire and later the British Empire. The valor and bravery of its men during the two world wars led to its rapid independence.

As a whole, Malta indeed in a melting pot combining different cultural influences to its own. Its villages date back to the medieval times where most people practice Catholicism, festivals and carnivals. Its language is a mixture of Sicilian dialect, Arabic and English. Lastly, its natural sport is British’s own, soccer.
