Madeira may be situated off the coast of mainland Portugal Holidays but this tropical paradise is very accessible and continues to become more accessible especially among international tourists as its tourism industry has been further developed. There are two ways to get to Madeira to start your cheap holidays in this beautiful place- by air and by water.

By Air
Most of tourists even those from Portugal arrive in the archipelago for their most awaited cheap holidays Madeira by air; roughly 95% of the whole tourist population. Flying to Madeira directly is very convenient and even cheaper especially if you are coming from outside of Portugal.
There are many direct flights from European cities of the United Kingdom and Ireland or take a connecting flight from the capital city of Lisbon in mainland Portugal. Flights from the rest of Europe are only between 3-4 hours and passengers can choose to take chartered or scheduled flights.
There are many airlines that fly to Madeira like British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, Thomson, Niki and TAP Portugal to name a few.

By Water
There are two ways to reach Madeira by water – by riding a ferry or by taking a cruise ship. There are ferries that travel from other islands and from mainland Portugal to Madeira at least once a week for six to twelve months in a year. Most ferries travel to Madeira during the peak season of June to September. Passengers who are interested to take a ferry ride to Madeira can depart from the ports of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Algarve and Portimao. All of these ferries dock and arrive in the port of Funchal which is also the capital of Madeira. From Funchal passengers can take another two-hour ferry ride to the sister island of Porto Santo. The rest of the ferry rides can take from 12 to 21 hours of journey.
Lastly, luxury ships like cruise ships dock in the international port of Fungal. Many cruise ships carrying passengers especially during January make a quick pit-stop in its harbor.
