But this island in the Aegean Sea has been as center for medicine and longed considered as the sacred land of Asclepius, the god of healing and medicine. In fact, a temple which is still existent today, the Asklepieion is built in honor of the Greek god and Hippocrates and served as a hospital for many years.
Aside from its medical orientation, Kos is a rich and progressive island way back prehistoric times. Many tribes inhabited Kos like the Minoans, Achaeans, Dorians, Persians and Romans. Each group of people built edifices that like castles, fortress and houses with some still surviving.
With its rich historical background, Kos has its very dynamic culture and traditions. These are seen in their livelihood, festivals, religion and even their cuisine! They have many festivals in honor of certain Greek gods and goddesses; they follow the Greek Orthodox religion with the patriarch as their head of church.
As an island, most of the locals were fishermen and farmers; some cultivated crops and domesticated animals. People in Kos though lived in a small and in independent island are friendly and hospitable.
