Nerantzia Castle
More commonly known as the Castle of the Knights, this huge infrastructure of exceptional masonry was built by the knights of Saint John during the medieval times. This castle is located right in front of the Kos harbour and is actually built on top of another island. A draw bridge made of stone connects this castle to the main island.
Hippocrates Plane Tree
Hippocrates, the “father of medicine” is a very famous icon in Kos for they consider Kos as his birthplace. This tree is well –visited by tourists for legends say that, Hippocrates himself planted the tree and later taught his students under the shade of the tree.
They say that the tree is 500 years old and looking back at history, Hippocrates lived way earlier than 500 years ago! Hence, the present tree is a “descendant” of the original tree. Still, this tree is world-renowned as one of the largest in Europe and its seeds were donated to distinguished organizations in the United States, Australia and UK.
Asklepieion
Just four kilometers from the town center of Kos on top of a hill is an ancient temple dedicated to the god of health and medicine. This temple was used as medical center run by priests and still has the medical symbol of the snake visible.
Roman Odeon
The Romans lived and ruled over Kos during the height of their empire where they built many structures. The most common are the amphitheaters which were used for entertainment and notorious for gladiators killing and dying in front of cheering audience.
This landmark in Kos is very well preserved with its steps and almost all of its parts intact like the marble seats for the nobles and the granite seats for the commoners.
Casa Romana
Just close to the Roman Odeon is a Roman mansion built during the 2nd and 3rd century by the Romans. This Roman house has a total of 36 rooms with 3 atriums to ventilate and illuminate the rooms. The Casa Romana is an explicit example of brilliant architecture and interior design with its frescoes, mosaics, statues and other decorations.
