Ibiza History and Tradition:
Ibiza may be part of Spain but it has its own distinct culture and traditions, thanks to its dynamic history throughout its existence. Cheap holidays Ibiza is symbol of modernity and progress especially in its efforts to address the popularity of its tourism but its rich history contribute to its main industry.

Ibiza has been a lively and progressive city for centuries attracting many tribes and civilizations to settle in the island. Based on archaeological findings and cave paintings, Ibiza was settled at least 3000 years ago but it was the Carthigians who made a formal settlement in Ibiza. A mighty tribe from Northern Africa, the Carthigians monopolized the strategic location of the island and made a very important port and trading center. This group is also responsible to Ibiza’s most famous attraction – The Salt Flats. Salt was very important before and was used as a currency to buy commodities and products. Hence, they refer salt as “white gold” and discovered the simple process of evaporation to harvest salt in Ibiza.

Next are the Romans after the defeat of the Carthigians during the Punic Wars. The Romans’ greatest contribution to modern Ibiza is the “old town” or the D’Alt Villa. This old town has medieval houses and other Roman infrastructures and arts. The Arabs defeated the Romans and eventually conquered the islands. The Arabs built strong walls and watchtowers to protect the city. They also built fine houses of Moorish architecture which is still a part of modern-day style in Ibiza. The success of the Reconquista paved the way for the Catalans from mainland Spain. The Catalans, “hispanized” and “christianized” the island by building citadels and churches. Pirates also lured the islands as a perfect place to hide their loots.

Due to the different group of people that settled in the island, Ibiza has its own unique traditions. Its vibrant culture is a mixture of all influences from the Arabs, Romans and Christians alike. These cultural influences are seen in its festivals, dances, customs and other traditions.
