Corfu Sights and Monuments:
You can witness an enormous amount of cultural landmarks during your
cheap holidays in Corfu. It doesn’t offer the pleasures of its beaches but also remnants of its ancient history, from monuments to deserted villages and water parks.
Corfu is composed of twelve municipalities. Its primary town is also named Corfu which is where the Ionian University is located. You can find the beaches on Palaiokastritsa, Kassiopi, Sidari, and many others. The highest point in Corfu is Mount Pantokrator with an elevation of 2,972 feet. The chief plants in Corfu are vine, fig, oil olive, pear, apple and pomegranate.
The influence of the Venetians is evidenced by the Old Fortress which is a national stronghold monument. This was built in the 15th century and it forms an islet that also looks like a castle, a striking defense against the Turkish forces.
There is also the New Fortress which is perched on the hill overlooking a sea port. It houses a theater and the Municipal Hall. Adjacent to this is the Ionian Academy and the Agricultural Bank. You may also spend your cheap holidays by looking at cathedrals such as the Catholic Church of St. James which is a central parish throughout the whole island.
The St. Michael and St. George Palace which was built during the British rule are also found within this central square. Before the Greek monarchy was abolished, this used to serve as a summer palace for the king of
Greece. It now contains the Municipal Gallery and the Asian Art Museum.
Throughout the winding lanes of Corfu, you can see a lot of ancient and modern villages. Benitses is a fishing village which is one of the island’s main tourist attractions. A variety of
cheap hotels is waiting for you to enjoy the amenities and facilities offered. Here you can find several Greek cafes called bars and Greek cafes called taverns. This village has maintained its natural appeal and atmosphere despite the massive arrival of tourists all year round.
Paleokastritsa is northwest of the Corfu town and it overlooks the bay. It has 26 pebbly beaches running along its coast and along these beaches you can see many olive trees that have dramatic colors. Other outstand villages in Corfu are Pelekas, Kassiopi, Agni, and Auliotes. These villages either sit along the coast or on the hillsides or are situated in between.
